State Campaign on Homoeopathy for Mother and Child Care and Workshop on Homoeopathy for Healthy Mother and Happy Child at Union Territory of Lakshadweep


Launching of State campaign on Homoeopathy for Mother & Child Care and a State Workshop on Homoeopathy for Healthy Mother and Happy Child was held at Kavarathi and Agatti at Union Territory of Lakshadweep on 9 th and 11 th November 2009 . The workshop was organized by the Directorate of Medical and Health Services, Mission Directorate of NRHM, Lakshadweep and Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. This campaign was aimed to propagate the inherent strengths and potentiality of Homoeopathy for its role in mother and child care. The strength and potentiality of Homoeopathy was discussed with allopathic physicians, policy makers, print and electronic media and non-governmental organizations. Inaugural function, workshop and valedictory ceremony were planned for two days.

Day - I

Dr. K.P. Hamzakoya, Mission Director (NRHM), Lakshadweep welcomed the gathering. Campaign and the Work shop were inaugurated by the Hon'ble Administrator of Union Territory of Lakshadweep, J.K. Dadoo IAS. During his Inaugural speech, the Honourable Administrator expressed his own experiences on Homoeopathy and emphasized the need of Homoeopathy as a therapeutic system to be implemented in this part of the country. Dr. T.N. Sreedhara Kurup, Deputy Director I/C, Central Research Institute, Kottayam delivered the keynote address. Shri. Marnya Ete, IAS, Secretary (Health), Lakshadweep, Dr.Mansoor Ali.K.R, Govt. Homoeopathic Medical College, Calicut, Dr. Sanil Kumar.M.C, Govt. Homoeopathic Medical College, Calicut, Dr.P.P.Muthu Koya, Vice President cum Counsellor, District Panchayath and Shrimati. Kunhibi Teacher Vice Chair person, Village (Dweep) Panchayath delivered felicitations. Dr.N.P.Cheriya Koya, Homoeopathic physician, Community Health Centre, Amini, member of the state task force proposed vote of thanks. On this occasion translated copies of four posters, 8 handouts and a booklet on "Homoeopathy for Mother and Child Care- An Overview" were released.

Plenary session

The plenary session of the workshop was conducted as a formal meeting with the Mission Director (NRHM), Union Territory of Lakshadweep and other officials of NRHM. This meeting gave us the opportunity to know about the geographic isolation of this part of our country and its limitations. After the formal discussions, the NRHM director gave the positive nod for sanctioning 9 Homoeopathic dispensaries under NRHM in all the major islands of UT of Lakshadweep.

Scientific sessions and Technical sessions

The Scientific Session I

The scientific session were held at the Higher Secondary School Auditorium at Kavaratti, which were well attended even if the weather here were very hostile.

Dr. T. N. Sreedhara Kurup, Deputy Director I/C, Central Research Institute, Kottayam presented a paper on "Introduction to Homoeopathy and the Scope of Homoeopathy for Healthy Mother and Happy Child". Dr. Arti Maria, Paediatrician, Indira Gandhi Hospital , Kavarathi, discussed the "care of newborn child - a mother's perspective".

The Scientific Session II

In the afternoon session, Dr. Mansoor Ali. K. R, of Government Homoeopathic Medical College , Calicut , presented the topic "Homoeopathy in pregnancy and child care". Dr. Sanil Kumar. M. C, of Government Homoeopathic Medical College , Calicut discussed the topic, "Role of Homoeopathy in delivering MCH services and the implementing process of State Campaign on Homoeopathy for mother and child care".

Dr. M.P. Basheer, NFSG, Indira Gandhi Hospital , Kavaratti talked on the subject "Female infanticide and PNDT Act". Dr. Mishra, CMO (Ayurveda), Indira Gandhi Hospital , Kavaratti discussed the topic "Ayush system of medicines in Lakshadweep ". The scientific sessions for the day 1 was concluded by a speech on " Lakshadweep and Homoeopathy" by Dr. N.P. Cheriyakoya, Homoeopathic Physician, CHC, Amini.

Interactive sessions with the participants and resource persons established that Homoeopathy will be well received in this part of the country and the policy makers and the physicians of other systems of medicine extended their full support in the successful implementation of the 9 new NRHM dispensaries in the major islands of Lakshadweep .

Dr. M.P. Basheer, NFSG, Indira Gandhi Hospital , Kavaratti were the moderator. This programme were given wide publicity in all the print and visual media available in the Union Terrritory of Lakshadweep.

Day - 2

The second day, the hostile weather were changed which had a positive effect in the number of participants. We were also feeling very comfortable with the change in the weather. The campaign were held at the administrative wing of the museum building at Agatti.

Dr. Mohammed Koya, Chief physician, C.H.C, Agatti, Lakshadweep welcomed the gathering. Campaign and the Work shop were inaugurated by the Deputy Collector of Agatti Shri. Kunji Koya and he extended all his support in the successful implementation of the campaign. Dr. T.N. Sreedhara Kurup, Deputy Director I/C, Central Research Institute, Kottayam delivered the keynote address. Shri. Marnya Ete, IAS, Secretary (Health), Lakshadweep , Dr.Mansoor Ali.K.R, Govt. C, of Government Homoeopathic Medical College , Calicut discussed the topic, Role of Homoeopathy in Delivering MCH services and the importance of a State Campaign on Homoeopathy for mother and child care.

The final Wrapup Session for drafting of resolutions by all sessions was chaired by Shri. Kunji Koya, Deputy Collector, Agatti,. Dr.Cheriya Koya, Member, State Task force presented the resolutions. Dr. T.N.Sreedhara Kurup, Deputy Director I/C, CRI (H), Kottayam discussed the resolutions with participants.

The Valedictory Function - Sri. Kunji koya, Deputy Collector, Agatti presided and presented the resolutions drawn by the Scientific Committee and Policy Makers. Dr. T.N.S. Kurup, Deputy Director I/C, Central Research Institute (H), Government of India, Dr.Mansoor Ali.K.R and Dr. Sanil Kumar.M.C, Government Homoeopathic Medical College, Calicut, Dr. M.P. Basheer, NFSG, IGH, Kavaratti Dr. Mohammed Koya, Chief Physician, C.H.C, Agatti and Dr. Cheriya Koya, State Task Force member also participated.

Resolution

Homoeopathy medicines are very simple to administer. It has no side effects, so it can be safely administered to mother and child. This campaign should be continued and should reach the grass root level and the poor benefited.

We are very thankful to the Honorable Administrator of Union Territory of Lakshadweep who had made this campaign a fruitful one, and also extends our whole hearted appreciation to all the people who were involved in the successful conduct of this workshop and TOT. I hope this will be the start of a golden era of Homoeopathy in Lakshadweep and from getting the feedback from the participants, I am sure homoeopathy which is in its budding state here will go a long way. Hon'ble Administrator instructed the NRHM and director and Homeopathic physician to conduct similar campaign at Minicoy and Andrott Islands.
