Abstract: Tautopathy, a sister branch of homeopathy has always been an enigma. Some feel it to be a part of Homeopathy while some keep it under Isopathy. In this article detailed information about what is Tautopathy and its Drugs is given.

What is Tautopathy?

Tautopathy (Tauto- same and pathy - therapy) is a method of curing or removing bad effects or side effects of drugs, mostly conventional, by administering the identical harmful agent in potentised form. For. e.g., If one is suffering from the bad effects or side-effects of the antibiotic Penicillin, one can use potentised Penicillin to remove its side effects. This concept has been proved, experimented and verified time and again by many homeopaths. It has been found clinically that the harmful effects or injurious effect after overdose of Lead, Arsenic etc can be removed after the same substance (Lead, Arsenic) is taken in potentised doses.

Tautopathy and Homoeopathy

Tautopathy is the Science of Identicals while Homeopathy is Science of Similars. In Homeopathy we always select the medicine producing similar effects as that of the disease but with a different source (whilst differing in kind), while in Tautopathy we administer the same drug (whose injurious effect is present) after potentisation. In this it is more similar to Isopathy where we take the identical substance in potentised dose.

We can rather say that Tautopathy is Indirect Homeopathy. It is Homeopathy minus actual proving of the drugs on healthy provers. It is based on the basis of:

  • Causative Factor (abuse of the corresponding drug) and
  • Symptoms produced as side effects of the abused drug.

In the present era Homeopathy suffers a setback due to the use of present day "wonder drugs" with their bad effects creating drug diseases. The side effects produced by these drugs are nothing but an euphemistic phrase for drug-diseases or iatrogenic diseases. These are responsible for the obstinately harmful and almost incurable iatrogenic diseases. It is a true fact that every medicine has some side effects or harmful effect; when these are taken in high doses or in sensitive patients they create drug diseases. Other than being incurable they cause difficulty in the process of cure. Sometimes we have felt in our private practice too that a case which has the history of complaint since taking a particular Allopathic drug does not improve howsoever similar medicine we choose. These bad effects and drug diseases are to be removed to affect a true cure before we prescribe Homeopathic drug.

Even Dr. Hahnemann advocated such cases as incurable cases in § 75 of his Organon of Medicine. " These inroads on human health effected by the allopathic non-healing art (more particularly in recent times) are of all chronic diseases the most deplorable, the most incurable; and I regret to add that it is apparently impossible to discover or to hit upon any remedies for their cure when they have reached any considerable height."

Administering Tautopathic Drugs: It is in such cases that Tautopathic drugs have a major role. Either they relieve the patient of the effects of the drug thereby curing the disease or remove the blockage helping the similimum to establish cure.

The first step in dealing with such cases is to seek out and stop the use of drugs and antidote them rather than to proceed blindly to give more drugs.

Though we have Nux-vom, Puls, Sulphur etc to antidote the effects of Allopathic prescriptions but we cannot administer them in all the patients having history of Antibiotics, Iron-tonics and Creams.

The only guide to the use of these medicines is the Causative history i.e patient has a history of previous use of the medicines and after taking them how the patient reacted.

The indication for Tautopathy depends on the type of effect:

  1. Pharmacological Effect: A drug may have many effects but very often it is prescribed for its main effect. eg Aspirin, an analgesic, also irritates the gastric mucosa and produces hyperacidity; Sorbitrate, given for coronary dilatation, also dilates other arteries and leads to heaviness of head because of increased flow of blood to the brain. These are termed as side effects. These effects subside as soon as the drug is stopped. If severe they need to be managed by short acting drugs eg Nux-vom 30 for apthae after prolonged intake of Antibiotics.
  2. Toxicological Effect: Certain drugs, if given in high doses or continued for long time produce toxic effects. for eg
    • Gastric ulcer after prolonged intake of Aspirin.
    • Hair fall after radiation or Chemotherapy. For Management of these effects, first stop the drug and then give the Antidote.
  3. Immunosuppressive Effect: There are certain drugs, which are known to suppress body immunity and render the individual prone to diseases like Tuberculosis, Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, and Aplastic anemia etc. For management of such diseases, first stop the drug and then adopt Tautopathic procedure i.e. drug prepared from the alleged drug itself.
  4. Drug-Miasm Effect: Prolonged use of certain constitutional drugs produces a Drug Miasm. It is more powerful than the natural morbific agents are. The patient then produces symptoms, which are called Drug Diseases. These diseases are most difficult to cure eg Steroid Diabetes, Thyroid disorders etc. For managing such cases, first stop the drug and than start constitutional treatment along with intermittent doses of tautopathic drug, if available.

Tautopathy in itself is not an isolated system of medicine, but when used in conjunction with homeopathy it helps to establish cure rapidly, gently and permanently.

Preparation of Tautopathic Drugs: These drugs are prepared by Hahnemannian method of drug dynamisation i.e Trituration and Succussion

How are Tautopathic Drugs different from Allopathic Drugs

"Tautopathic drugs have nothing to do with allopathy on the following grounds (i) they are used on the basis of symptoms produced by the crude drug on diseased person (unhealthy provers) (ii) they are strictly prepared in the process of Homeopathic pharmaceutical discipline (iii) they are used in potentcies" (Dr.J.N.Kanjilal)

Advantages of Tautopathic Drugs:

The benefits of Tautopathic drugs are:

  1. They can be proved according to Homeopathic "Proving" and can be inculcated in Homeopathic Materia Medica.
  2. They anti-dote the bad effects of crude or offending and harmful identical agents.

Limitations of Tautopathy: Inspite of so many benefits Tautopathy cannot cure all types of drug diseases; its use is limited to those cases where disease symptoms are clearly attributable to the side effects of overdosing with a particular allopathic drug.
