Psychology was officially recognized as a legitimate science in 1879. Since then, psychology has further evolved into smaller, more specific subsets of study. While there are many different branches of psychology, the most prominent include:

  1. General Psychology
    It is relatively a large area or field of psychology which deals with the fundamental rules, principles and theories of psychology in relation to the study of behaviour of normal adult human beings.
  2. Abnormal Psychology
    It is that branch or field of psychology which describes and explains the behaviour of abnormal people in relation to their own environment. The causes, symptoms and syndromes, description and treatment of the abnormalities of behaviour form the subject matter of this branch.
  3. Applied Psychology
    Applied Psychology concentrates more on theoretical formulations that many other specialties like industrial, consumer, engineering, community and environmental psychology.
  4. Clinical Psychology
    Clinical psychology comes into picture after the work and operations of the knowledge and activities connected with abnormal psychology. Clinical psychology today has quite wide range. All the leading hospitals of our country have a clinical psychologist appointed in them. Who tries to find out the reason of illness due to abnormal behaviour,
  5. Behavioral Psychology
    It studies the mental processes and the behavioral patterns of humans as well as non-human subjects. This branch of psychology is more concerned with the physical functioning of the brain and its cells and the psychological state of that individual
  6. Counseling Psychology
    Counseling Psychology is the field of psychology which implements and uses the psychological techniques to assist individuals in coping up with normal psychological problems.
  7. Cognitive Psychology
    Cognitive psychology is the branch of psychology that studies mental processes including how people think, perceive, remember and learn.
  8. Comparative psychology
    Comparative psychology looks into the differences and similarities in behavior of different animal species. This field study in details the activities, needs, abilities and other aspects of animal species and consequently make a comparative analysis with human beings.
  9. Consumer Psychology
    Consumer Psychology is the area of psychology which understands the motivation of consumers and applying the acquired knowledge to influence the consumers buying habits.
  10. Developmental psychology
    Developmental psychology involves the study of emotions, intellectual, and the social changes in the lifespan of human beings. Development psychology is important in understand the cycle of human development from infancy to late adulthood.
  11. Educational psychology
    This field of psychology deals with the field of education. It works to improve materials, teaching method, solving learner's problems, and measuring the ability and the progress of students in education. It may involve development of assessment tests, teaching methods, and investigation of student learning process.
  12. Engineering Psychology
    Engineering Psychology is more concerned with the study of relationship of people to machine to the purpose of improving such relationships. This branch may also involve in redesigning equipment, improving the work environment changing the way in which people uses machines or changing the location of the area.
  13. Environmental Psychology
    Environmental Psychology emphasizes on the studies of the effect of physical environment such as: the heat, noise, crowding, upon behavior, feeling and health of people.
  14. Experimental Psychology
    Experimental psychology is an area of psychology that utilizes scientific methods to research the mind and behavior. Experimental psychologists work in a wide variety of settings including colleges, universities, research centers, government and private businesses.
  15. Health Psychology
    The field of health psychology is focused on promoting health as well as the prevention and treatment of disease and illness. Health psychologists also focus on understanding how people react, cope and recover from illness. Some health psychologists work to improve the health care system and the government's approach to health care policy.
  16. Industrial Psychology
    Industrial psychology involves the study of people at work. This field of study investigates matters relating to work place interaction, employee motivation through rewarding and other strategies that motivate employees. Psychologists in the field may also study personnel selection, leadership, and management issues. This field is also closely related to organizational psychology.
  17. Social Psychology
    Social psychology is a field that studies the social behavior of both individuals and groups. Its more emphasis is on how individual and group behavior is essentially affected by presence and the influence of others. Social psychologists mostly concentrate on the process of communication, political behavior, and the formation of individual attitudes.
  18. Child Psychology
    This branch of psychology deals with the study of the behaviour and the process of growth and development of the children from birth to the beginning of the period of adolescence.
  19. Adolescent Psychology
    In this branch of psychology we study the process of growth and development during adolescence, and the personality characteristics, behavioural and adjustment problems of the adolescents. It helps the elders to understand the adolescents in their proper perspectives for helping them in their proper adjustment as well as personal and social welfare.
  20. Adult Psychology
    This branch of psychology deals with the study of the behaviour of the adults. The characteristics of the growth and development in various dimensions of their personality, their interests, aptitudes and attitudes, the typical behavioural and adjustment problems specially related to this period etc. are studied here. The knowledge of adult psychology proves helpful to the teachers of adult education, workers and counsellors for teaching and guiding them properly for their individual and social progress.
  21. Sports Psychology
    This branch of psychology is concerned with the study of the behaviour of the players and sports personnel in relation to the activities, experiences, situations and environment prevailing in the world of sports.
