In Aphorism 164, Dr. Hahnemann says, "The small number of homeopathic symptoms present in the best selected medicines is no obstacle to the cure in cases where these few medicinal symptoms are chiefly of an uncommon kind and such as are peculiarly distinctive (characteristic) of the disease; the cure takes place under such circumstances without any peculiar disturbances." Dr. H.C.Allen also endorses his view by saying that in order to prescribe successfully at least 3 key note symptoms should be present which he called "Allen's Three legged stool". Keeping this in mind let me narrate a few cases wherein instantaneous good results were obtained.

CASE 1: Calcified Chalazion

Miss XYZ, 28 yrs of age came with the Chief Complaint of a small circular swelling about the size of a pea on the right upper eye lid since the last few weeks. She had taken extensive Homeopathic treatment from renowned Homeopaths with no relief. No other symptoms were elicitable. On examination, the Chalazion was very hard.

Platanus 10M was prescribed repeatedly and full recovery took place within a short period of time. If we look into Boericke's Materia medica the important quotes are, "Tarsal tumors, both acute and old neglected cases, where destruction of tissue occurred and cicatrical contraction caused marked deformity of lid, restored to practically normal condtons."

CASE 2: Infected Stye

An intern of Yerla Homeopathic College came to me with the chief complaint of a stye on the right upper eye lid which was infected. It was very painful with agglutination of eye lids especially in the morning. The intern at times used to cry with pain. She had taken homeopathic treatment but complete resolution of the stye did not take place.

Pulsatilla 10M was given repeatedly; within 2 days, the stye burst and discharged yellow purulent pus giving complete relief.

CASE 3: Acute Conjunctivitis.

Mr. XYZ, a medical student came to the OPD, of Navi-Mumbai Municipal Corporation Hospital, Vashi with the chief complaint of congestion of both the eyes. Severe burning pains with intense photophobia. The patient was extremely anxious about the same.

Argentum-nitricum 0/2, in LM potency was prescribed. Immediate relief was obtained within short span of 3 days.

It is worth remembering the saying of Dr. Frank Bodman which lead to the selection of the remedy. Quote: "In a physical case the mental concomitant are useful in selection of the remedy and vice versa." Thus in this case the important mental concomitant was of great anxiety with the physical complaint of congestion of eyes.

CASE 4: Macular degeneration.

Mrs XYZ, 77 yrs of age came with the chief complaint of hazy vision of the left eye, since a few days. Cannot see complete objects which were distorted. She was diagnosed by an Ophthalmologist as having "Macular degeneration." Was put on Tab I-Vit once a day with little relief…..

Benzinum-dinitricum 1M (repeated frequently) was prescribed and the vision improved slowly over a period of 3-4 months. Thus palliation was achieved.

If we look into Boericke's materia-medica the important quotes are "Degeneration in amblyopia, field of vision contracted"

It is worth noting that in all the cases, there were peculiar distinctive (characteristic) symptoms, as the susceptibility was high, high potency was prescribed with frequent repetition. Thus from our great masters writings, we should always remember that higher the degree of susceptibility, higher is the potency with frequent repetition.

CONCLUSION:

There are many ways of prescribing but if one follows the instructions given in the Bible of Homeopathy i.e Organon, success is assured.
