Flu - Introduction

The flu or influenza is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. The influenza virus usually enters the body through mucous membranes in the mouth, nose or eyes. When a person with the flu coughs or sneezes, the virus then becomes airborne and can be inhaled by anyone nearby. The flu virus will usually be prominent during the fall and winter.

Every year in the United States, on average:

  • 5% to 20% of the population gets the flu,
  • more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications, and
  • 20,000-40,000 people die from flu.

Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications.

Causes

The flu is caused by three types (strains) of viruses - influenza A, B and C. Type A is responsible for the deadly influenza pandemics (worldwide epidemics) that strike every 10 to 40 years. Type B can lead to smaller, more localized outbreaks that generally occur every three to 15 years. And either types A or B can cause the flu that circulates almost every winter. Type C is less common and causes only mild symptoms.

Type C is a fairly stable virus, but types A and B are constantly changing, with new strains appearing regularly. Once you've had the flu, you develop antibodies to the virus that caused it, but those antibodies won't protect you from new strains.

Symptoms

It is normal to mistake the flu for another ailment such as a cold or just "feeling under the weather. Generally Flu appear 1 to 3 days after exposure to the virus. The onset of symptoms often seems sudden. Symptoms can be mild or severe. They can become severe from mild without much notice. Be aware of your body and monitor your body temperature.

Common signs and symptoms of the flu include:

Homeopathic Approach

According to homeopathy people are receiving flu virus from some one, rather than some body is spreading it. Persons with strong immunity will not get flu even if they get exposed to virus. People can prevent flu attack by making their health and immunity strong.

Influenza virus stains change every year. Previous vaccination or earlier suffering with flu do not protect you from getting flu again.

Individually selected remedies to their unique set of symptoms will give immediate relief with no side effects. Some may have fever, headache and others may experience runny nose, vomiting and Diarrhea.
