Warm days have come to an end and the fall begins. During this time of year there is a serious restructuring happening in nature, and we are a part of it. The body tries to adjust to the cold, reduced daylight hours and the head is trying to get used to the idea that we will have to wait for warmer days for a long, long time. Many cannot stand it. Constant headaches, runny nose, annoying cough, sore throat and tiredness make people's life a misery. The cold and flu seasons begin this time of year because of the drop in humidity, and because adults and children spend more time inside sharing germs, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
Although it isn't a serious condition, it is quite bothersome, uncomfortable and it makes life extremely difficult. The dryness of the fall and winter also leads to more colds and influenza infections by drying out the nasal passage, which lets more viruses and bacteria enter the system, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Moreover, the sudden changes in temperature strain our immune systems, since the body takes hours to acclimate itself.
In early autumn, it feels cold in the morning but quite hot in the noon that keeps people far from comfort. If we are not careful, some diseases may happen to us quietly. If we can pay closer attention to diseases that happen to people most frequently in autumn, we may keep ourselves in a good health.
Some diseases which prevail at the turn of Summer and Autumn caused by the heavy fluctuations in temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure are:
Common Cold/Flu:
In Autumn climate changes unusually as such it is the peak season of influenza. Rain, strong wind and humidity variations are all factors that contribute to lowering our immune system, making it easier for us to catch a cold. The good thing is these autumn colds usually aren't as sever as those in the winter season, however it is still important to see a doctor and treat them to prevent the risk of a viral infection.
For preventing its attack, choose suitable cloth according to temperature. Spend more time on outdoor sports, increase intake of water and fruits. Using the cold water to wash face and nose frequently is also good for preventing the cold.
Bronchitis and Bronchial Asthma:
Autumn is a high-risk period when the chronic bronchitis happens. It is also the season which favors asthma, specifically allergic asthma or dry asthma. Allergic asthma doesn't manifest along with bronchitis and thankfully has a seasonal character, the most common symptom being difficulty in breathing.
To pay attention to maintaining a good mood, in order to enhance the body's immunity and resistance, Improve the living environment and keep the air flowing.
Gastroduodenal ulcer/Peptic Ulcer:
Another common disease during this time of year is ulcer, which can have many underlying causes like smoking, alcohol, stress, poor eating habits, chronic diseases, genetical factors or bacterial infections with Helicobacter Pylori. The most common symptoms are variations in appetite, pain and vomiting. Gastric ulcer pains are more common immediately after a meal while duodenal ulcer pains are more common a few hours after a meal. Either way if you experience pain or vomiting after meals you should see your doctor.
Best method to avoid such complaints is to go for semifluid porridges and soups. Porridges are best prepared from oat flakes with water or with milk, adding a little sugar. Soups must be vegetarian, with carrots, potatoes, cauliflower or broccoli. The food can be seasoned with olive, or better - with linseed oil. Intake of weak tea without sugar and fresh fermented milk products is also helpful. The best fruits to eat are bananas and baked apples.
Heart failure
Heart failure or cardiac insufficiency can be a real dangerous threat to people with heart problems during the autumn months. The body struggles to adapt to the changes in climate and that can overload the cardio-respiratory system, causing serious consequences. Caution is advised during this time of year, as well as strictly following any treatment prescribed. Spending thirty or forty minutes outdoors, taking walks every day is helpful. Don't miss the medications advised by doctor and call an ambulance in case of emergency.
Rheumatic diseases
Rheumatic diseases such as arthritis are very common as well in this season causing increased sensibility and joint pains due to exposure to low temperatures. Hot baths, acupuncture, anti-inflammatory and analgesic ointments and simply avoiding going on walks in cold or rainy weather are all measures one can take to avoid suffering the symptoms of this disease.
If seasonal joint pain appears, take B group vitamins that improve the nutrition of nerve roots and the cartilage surfaces of joints, as well as calcium supplements.
Dress warmer and pay attention to therapeutic exercises. A complex of simple exercises can help to maintain joint mobility and the efficiency of muscles. The exercises should be done only in a warm room. The movements should not cause pain.
Obesity
Obesity is also a serious problem among people in autumn. The human body can actively accumulate fat so as to deal with the upcoming cold winter. Thus, obesity can be easily caused. However, the fat accumulated inside the human body can not only affect the bodily form but also cause various diseases, such as high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis. In order to maintain the normal weight, maintain adequate rest and increase the intake of vegetables and fruits like corn and tomatoes so as to relax the bowels. Vitamins like vitamin C should be adequately supplemented to enhance the human immunity. Regular exercise and walks also help in avoiding obesity.
