PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE: LIFETSTYLE MANAGEMENT IN ORTHOPAEDICS The modern hi tech life has its comforts but it also accounts for the steep rise in the orthopaedic complaints of the present day. It accounts for the epidemic proportions of cases of low back ache, joint disorders, degenerative diseases that we find in our clinics and also around us. The common risk factors attributing to the orthopedic complaints are: Lack of proper exercises Improper postures Sedentary lifestyle Change in work methods Obesity Lack of Nutritious diet (especially vitamins and minerals) Stress, Stress, Stress!!! These factors when combined with a strong family history along with some immediate cause surface in the form of backache, pain in limbs, malaise etc. The commonest among these complaints is backache. It is known as an urban comfort malady, primarily the result of bad posture and weak muscles. The ignorance about the working of lower back leads to a callous misuse or disuse of our more than 140 back muscles and the lumbar region The continued disuse of our back muscles, a gift of the modern ultra comfort life style, brings about their enfeeblement and more pressure passes on to the spine, increasing the chances of injury manifold. To relieve ourselves from these disorders requires maintenance of a healthy lifestyle apart from proper medications. Main components of a healthy lifestyle include: Regular exercise Healthy eating Proper posture No smoking Managing stress It is one of the chief duties of clinicians to educate their patients about the lifestyle management along with the medications. It becomes even more essential for homeopaths, for he is the preserver of health. Other than medications he should train his patient about healthy lifestyle. The most vital thing for the perfect choice of similimum in most of the cases irrespective of their diagnosis is a complete case taking. A Case well taken is Half cured. For a homeopath the presentation of the case, the subjective as well as objective presentation, the pain-its specifications, radiation, character, modifications, concomitants, its history help to clinch the medicine. In the July-August Issue of Homeopathic Horizon Ezine we have tried to cover almost all the common problems of Orthopaedics. A detailed account of various orthopaedic disorders and their management has been included along with personal experiences of the clinicians. With an aim to spread the utility of homeopathy in the specialised field of Orthopedics we present to the profession a compiled synopsis of amalgamation of Orthopedics and Homeopathy. Wishing a joyful reading! |
